How it works
- Drop a photo onto the tool, paste it from the clipboard, or browse for a file.
- Set the pixel size — smaller grids give chunkier, more stylised pixel art.
- Pick a palette: keep the original colors reduced to a few tones, or apply a retro palette like Game Boy, NES or PICO-8.
- Toggle dithering to blend colors with a classic retro texture.
- Choose an export scale and download your pixel art as a sharp PNG.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn an image into pixel art?
Upload or paste any image, choose how many pixels wide the result should be, and the converter instantly redraws it on a pixel grid. Pick a palette and a dithering style, then export the result as a PNG at the scale you need.
What pixel size should I use?
It depends on the look you want. 32 to 64 pixels wide gives a chunky retro sprite look, while 128 to 256 keeps more detail and works well for landscapes and portraits. The preview updates instantly, so try a few sizes.
What is dithering and when should I use it?
Dithering mixes two palette colors in a pattern to fake in-between shades. Floyd–Steinberg gives a soft, film-grain texture that suits photos; ordered (Bayer) gives the crosshatch pattern you see in old games. Leave it off for clean, flat-color pixel art.
Which color palette should I choose?
Original keeps the colors of your image, reduced to the number you choose with the slider. The retro palettes remap your image to real hardware colors: Game Boy for the classic green look, NES and Commodore 64 for 8-bit vibes, PICO-8 for modern fantasy-console art, and CGA for early PC style.
Is this image to pixel art converter free?
Yes — completely free, with no sign-up and no watermark. Export as many PNGs as you like, at any scale up to 4096 pixels.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using the canvas API. Your image never leaves your device — nothing is uploaded, stored or shared.
Can I use the result for Minecraft builds?
Yes — pixel art maps naturally onto blocks, one pixel per block. For block-accurate results, try our dedicated Minecraft Pixel Art Generator: it maps your image to real block colors and adds a material list plus a row-by-row build guide.
