Why a sphere is easier than it looks
Nobody builds a sphere as a sphere. Every horizontal slice of one is a flat circle, so the whole job is a stack of circles of changing size — and a circle is something you can copy row by row. The only genuinely awkward part is the middle, where each layer hangs out past the one below it and needs scaffolding. Work bottom to top, keep one layer ahead of yourself with temporary blocks, and mine them out at the end.
Five mistakes that ruin a sphere
- Building it solid. Outline mode keeps only the shell. A solid sphere costs several times more blocks and nobody ever sees the inside.
- Losing count of the layers. Layer 1 is the bottom. Jump around and the shape stops being symmetrical.
- No scaffolding for the middle. The widest layers overhang. Without temporary blocks underneath you cannot place them at all.
- Picking an even diameter by accident. Even spheres have no single centre column, which makes them harder to line up with a build below.
- Starting a 100-block sphere on a whim. Check the total block count first. Large shells run into tens of thousands of blocks.

- Choose a sphere or a dome, and set the diameter up to 256 blocks.
- The 3D preview shows the whole shape with the layer you are on highlighted.
- Step through the layers with the arrows, or click a layer in the preview to jump to it.
- Build each layer on top of the last one — every layer is just a circle.
- Mark blocks off as you place them, and export any layer as a PNG blueprint.
Frequently asked questions
How do you make a sphere in Minecraft?
A sphere is a stack of circles that grow to the middle and shrink again. Set the diameter, then step through the layers: each one is a flat circle you build on top of the previous. The 3D preview shows where you are in the shape.
What is the difference between a sphere and a dome?
A dome is the top half of a sphere, starting from the widest layer. Use sphere mode for floating orbs and planets, and dome mode for roofs, observatories and greenhouses.
How many blocks does a Minecraft sphere need?
The counter shows both the blocks in the current layer and the total for the whole shape, so you know what to mine before you start. A hollow sphere needs far fewer blocks than a solid one — outline mode only keeps the shell.
Why does my sphere look lumpy?
Almost always because a layer was built with the wrong diameter. Follow the layer numbers in order and use the centre guides to mirror each quarter; the shape only reads round if every layer is exactly right.
How do I build the overhanging middle layers?
Place temporary scaffolding under the widest layers, build the shell, and mine the scaffolding away afterwards. Working from the bottom up means you only ever scaffold one layer at a time.
What is the biggest sphere I can plan?
Up to 256 blocks across, and the 3D preview works at every size — it scales to fit, so a 256 block sphere is still shown whole. Bear in mind a shell that big runs into hundreds of thousands of blocks.
Does this work in Java and Bedrock?
Yes. The layers are pure geometry, so they work in every Minecraft edition and version.
Can I use this for a hemisphere or a half-dome?
Dome mode gives you the top half of a sphere, which is the hemisphere most builds need. For a half-dome, build the dome and stop at the halfway column — the chart still tells you which blocks belong to each layer.
