How to read this chart

Shell vs solid. Almost nobody fills a sphere in. The shell column is the surface only, which is what you place when you build a hollow ball or a dome roof. The solid column is there for the rare case where the inside matters — and to show how fast it grows: a 51×51 sphere is 6,642 blocks hollow and 69,599 solid, more than ten times as many.

A dome is not always half. With an even diameter it works out to exactly half the shell. With an odd diameter there is one single widest layer and the dome keeps it whole, so a 15×15 dome is 285 blocks rather than the 265 you would get by halving the 530-block shell.

Wider does not always mean more. On a hollow sphere the middle layers are thin rings and the end layers are nearly solid caps, so block count does not track width in a straight line. The layer-by-layer breakdown above shows exactly where each size gets thinner or thicker as it goes up.

Frequently asked questions

How many blocks do I need for a Minecraft sphere?

It depends on the diameter and on whether you build it hollow or solid. A 21×21 sphere is 1,082 blocks as a hollow shell and 4,945 blocks solid. A 9×9 is 186 hollow and 389 solid. The table on this page lists every diameter from 1 to 100.

Is a dome just half a sphere?

It depends on whether the diameter is odd or even. An even diameter splits cleanly down the middle, so the dome is exactly half the shell. An odd diameter has one single widest layer, and the dome keeps that layer whole — a 9×9 sphere shell is 186 blocks and its dome is 105, not the 93 you would get by halving it.

Why does a wider layer sometimes need fewer blocks?

On a hollow sphere the middle layers are thin rings, while the top and bottom layers are almost solid caps. In a 9×9 sphere, layer 3 is 9 blocks wide but needs only 20 blocks, while layer 2 is 7 wide and needs 24. It looks wrong and it is correct.

Should I use an odd or an even diameter?

Odd diameters have an exact centre column, which is what you want when the sphere has to line up with a tower, a beacon or a base below it. Even diameters have a 2×2 centre and sit neatly inside an even footprint.

How do I actually build a sphere in Minecraft?

Build it one horizontal layer at a time from the bottom up, using the width listed for each layer. The widest layers overhang, so place temporary scaffolding underneath before you get there and remove it at the end.

Do I need mods or WorldEdit to use this?

No. This is a reference chart for building by hand in survival or creative. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for, and it works on any version.
